May 2019 Expert Guide

The Alberta Motor Association’s monthly Expert Guide connects journalists with experts on timely topics that matter to Albertans, helping create compelling and trusted news stories. We invite you to use the information below or to contact us for an interview with one of our subject matter experts. ama.newsroom@ama.ab.ca 1-888-960-6397

Sharing the road: Across Alberta, more than eight in 10 collisions involving cyclists – and six in 10 collisions involving motorcycles – result in injury or death. As the warmer months are riskiest for commuters on two wheels, AMA’s Driver Education experts can share critical tips about sharing the road.

The edge on Star Wars: May the 4th be with you (tomorrow, anyway). With Disney’s 14-acre Galaxy’s Edge opening at month’s end, our College of Disney Knowledge-educated experts can provide a sneak preview of what to expect. From a build-your-own-lightsaber store to a refreshment stand selling green milk, “virtual queuing” to stroller restrictions, we’ve got the goods on the biggest expansion in Disney Parks history.

Roadside assistance… for bicycles: Few people realize that, in Alberta, you can get a tow for your 10-speed as easily as you can for your car. AMA Bike Assist was introduced to meet commuters’ growing passion for travelling on two wheels: Statistics Canada reports that the number of people cycling to work has skyrocketed by 62 percent since 1996 – more than twice the pace of overall commuter growth. Our experts can talk about this unique roadside assistance program, which includes everything from pumping up a flat tire to putting a loose chain back on.

Large-family travel: For the eight per cent of Canadian households with five people or more, planning family travel can be fraught and expensive – if you don’t have the right help. Everything from fire regulations on room capacity to basic supply-and-demand (the average household in Canada is just 2.47 people) can dramatically affect the price of a vacation. Our experts can share tips for avoiding sticker shock and scoring the best deals as vacation season kicks off.
